Tel Gezer

Here are some more pics taking at Tel Gezer.

Working in the ash from an 8th century destruction of the city.

Trench that was dug looking for the city walls.
It is about 20 ft long & 6 ft deep...no walls found yet.

Defensive Wall of the city. One of the largest ever found in Israel.

An area where John worked. These stone walls are 2,800 years old.

Sunrise on Tel Gezer.
(The group arrives before sunrise each morning!)

Various Pics

Here are some various pics I thought you'd enjoy...

A friend from college created this and posted it on Facebook. Pretty cool!

John relaxing in a wheel barrow at the Tel.

John at pottery washing.
Pottery washing is in the afternoon and part of working at the Tel.

Fruit break on the Tel. (George Johnson is front left.)

George Johnson in front of the standing stones at Gezer.
George lives in Ashland and is in Jerusalem for a few weeks. John & George were able to connect so George came and stayed with our group two nights, working at the Tel on Friday, July 10th.

Galilee Trip

On the morning of Friday, July 3rd the group left to visit the Galilee region until Sunday evening.

Caesarea Maritima

Aquaduct near Caesarea

Synagogue at Capernum

Altar replica at Tel Dan

Remains of a first century fishing boat, which was found in the mud on the shores of the Sea of Galilee.
It is about 24 ft long & similar to the boats used in the time of Jesus.

July 4th Party & Talent Show

On Thursday, July 2nd, the place where John and the group are staying had a special outside meal for the group. Afterwards, the group had a "talent show" and they elected John as the MC for the night. John couldn't take many pictures, but I got some that others took of him.

All set up for the party...love those huge palm trees!

The group getting their food...hotdogs & hamburgers!

Israel - Tombs

(NOTE: Click on a picture to enlarge it.)

Last week, JB and some others went to some tombs near Tel Gezer. They didn't have their cameras, so today they went back and took some pictures.

John at the tomb entrance. Yes, he climbed into that hole.

Inside the tomb. One of the chambers. This is where the bodies would be laid.

JB & Terry Hofecker in one of the tomb chambers.

Four of the ATS students in one of the tomb chambers.

This is a different tomb that JB went into in Jersualem. These are ossuaries (bone boxes). After the body is laid out and it decomposes, the bones were put in these boxes.

Israel - Jerusalem & Bethlehem -1

After their second week of digging, the group went to Jersualem & Bethlehem...but some of these pics were when the ATS group went to Jerusalem before the dig actually began.
Dome of the Rock (on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem).

JB at the Herodium...one of my favorite pics so far!

Tunnel at the Herodium.

Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem.

Wall & guard tower separating Bethlehem from Israel.
(This wall was not here in 1997-98 when we lived in Israel.)

Israel - Jerusalem & Bethlehem Trip -2

More pics from the Jerusalem & Bethlehem trip.

Israel - Dead Sea area trip

On the weekends, the group doesn't work at Tel Gezer, but goes on trips to see other parts of Israel. After their first week of work, they went to the Dead Sea area and visited a number of places including Qumran (where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found), Masada, etc.
Sunset over the Mediterranean Sea.

JB at Qumran (Cave 4).

JB at Be'er Sheva.

JB & others at Tel Arad.

Israel - Tel Gezer 1

Every morning they take a "fruit break."

Here is JB at fruit break...he is very hot & dirty from working all morning!

Pillars at Tel Gezer.

At the Tel, the digging is done in squares. Each square is excavated about 6 inches at a time.
